Alcohol and Diabetes

Can I still drink alcohol?

AlcoholYes, as long as you have permission from your doctor and alcohol is taken in moderation.

Moderation

  • Men = 3 units of alcohol per day with 2-3 free days a week free
  • Women = 2 units of alcohol per day with 2-3 alcohol free days a week

What is a typical unit of alcohol?

A typical unit includes the following:

  • ½ a pint of beer
  • 1 pub measure of spirit (vodka, whiskey, gin)
  • 1 standard glass of wine

What are the dangers of drinking too much alcohol?

Drinking too much alcohol can prevent your liver releasing glucose (sugar) into your bloodstream. If you are on insulin or tablets this can make the sugar level in your blood fall even further and this may cause you to have a hypoglycaemic episode (hypo).

What can I do to help prevent a ‘hypo’ after drinking alcohol?

  • Do not drink excessive levels
  • Never drink on an empty stomach – Eat a starchy carbohydrate meal before drinking and try to eat small amounts often while drinking
  • After drinking always have a carbohydrate snack before going to bed to prevent a ‘hypo’ while you are sleeping
  • Remember to carry identification detailing that you have diabetes, as sometimes a hypo can be misunderstood. Strangers may believe the person is ‘just drunk’. It is a good idea to take someone with you knows how to treat a ‘hypo’.

Other tips to follow when enjoying a drink.

  • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • Low sugar alcohol drinks contain more alcohol content, thus increasing the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Drinks containing a lower alcohol level contain a higher sugar amount.
  • Always ensure you have 2-3 days alcohol free days.
  • Check your medication and never consume alcohol if it is recommended to avoid.

How will alcohol affect my diet?

Alcohol is high in calories, so if you are trying to lose weight the best advise is to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink.

Also, be careful of mixers; try to vary between diet and ordinary mixers.

When should I not drink alcohol?

  • If your doctor has advised you not to drink alcohol
  • If your diabetes control is not good.
  • Pregnant women or women who are trying to conceive should avoid alcohol

Remember never ever drink and drive!
