Diabetes and healthy teeth and gums

News | Aug 29, 2010

Did you know that people with diabetes are much more likely to have gum disease? There are mild and more serious forms of gum disease. Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums and develops when teeth are not brushed effectively. The gums look inflammed and swollen and may bleed when you brush your teeth. Periodontitis is a much more severe inflammation of the gums. It results from prolonged inflammation of the gums as a result of long-term plaque accumulation. The bone that holds the teeth in place can gradually be destroyed. If you have diabetes it is very important that you brush your teeth twice daily and visit your dentist regularly. Good control of your blood sugars also reduces the chances of getting gum disease.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland now on Facebook

News | Jul 26, 2010

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland have recently established a Northern Ireland specific group on Facebook. It can be difficult to reach certain groups of people with diabetes and they are hoping that the Facebook Group will take on a life of its own with people posting questions, comments and taking part in discussions. In this way it will be a peer support forum and provide an outlet for people to discuss their diabetes with other people who have the condition – in a way a bit like an online support group that people can dip in and out of. Diabetes UK are especially keen for the Group to provide support to children and young people who may not know many others with diabetes and who may also be going through the difficult transition stage. To visit the Group please go to http://bit.ly/aldNif
