Getting ready for pregnancy

If a young woman has diabetes then it is so important that she prepares for pregnancy. A recent nationwide survey by the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH) in England, Wales and in Northern Ireland investigated 3808 pregnancies in women with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The findings raise concern that some women with diabetes are not getting adequate preconception care and are poorly prepared for pregnancy. If you have diabetes and are thinking of a pregnancy then let your diabetes team know. We have a Diabetes Specialist Midwife (Clare Hughes) at the Ulster Hospital who can help you prepare for a pregnancy and answer all your questions. To get in touch ring 02890484511 extension 3137.

Starting insulin in groups

For many patients with type 2 diabetes the time comes when it is time to start on insulin therapy. Although we usually train individuals in insulin use on a one-to-one basis there is now evidence that starting insulin in groups is just as effective. Moreover starting insulin in groups can improve treatment satisfaction and is a more effective use of healthcare resources. Also seems to be a lot of fun sharing experiences and learning together. Your diabetes team is considering this and group insulin starts may be coming to a diabetes clinic near you soon.
